I spotted this gorgeous dress from the 1950’s at Halcyon in Richmond today. According to their Facebook page, this dress is around size 4-6. Its waist measures 27 inches and bust is about a 34 (give or take). It’s unbelievably lightweight. Not sure if it’s primarily a wedding dress, but I can see it worn at a vintage themed wedding! Get on it, ladies!

Capturing Love: The Art of Lesbian & Gay Wedding Photography

From CNN: Anyone who’s ever scanned a wedding album or set of engagement photos knows the standard poses: The dip. The kiss. Back to chest, prom-style. Forehead to forehead, anyone?

Most of those poses have been around for a long time and are based on the idea that there’s a man and a woman involved, wedding photographer Thea Dodd said. The placement of a hand or positioning of the groom contains assumptions about physicality and gender roles that often don’t apply to same-sex couples or even nontraditional straight couples.

Just as the traditional canon of wedding poses does not fit all heterosexual couples, there’s a lot of variety in same-sex weddings that photographers need to plan for, Dodd said.

But, as a straight person, she didn’t feel like she had the authority to rewrite the rules on her own. She approached Kathryn Hamm, president of GayWeddings.com, the first site to cater to same-sex couples, for advice. Together, they came up with “Capturing Love: The Art of Lesbian & Gay Photography,” a book to help photographers and couples understand the art and mechanics of shooting same-sex couple.

Very interesting! It’s not something that I ever thought of or considered when it comes to same-sex weddings.

Alternatives of Pachelbel’s Canon in D

At my wedding, I cheesed down the aisle to The Piano Guys’ Rockelbel’s Canon. For the longest time, I was hell-bent against having Pachelbel set foot anywhere near my wedding. Canon in D, I felt, was overdone… and not in the way that Mendelssohn’s Wedding March or Wagner’s Bridal Chorus (Here Comes the Bride) is overdone. It’s overdone in the sense that it can also be heard everywhere in popular music, not just weddings (see Pachelbel Rant); it’s generally boring against the swell of the organs in Wedding March and Bridal Chorus; it really isn’t as classic as you think it is (his piece was only rediscovered in the 1920s); I did not want to subject my cello friends to any torture (seriously, look at this cellist’s anguish); and as an off-beat bride, I simply did not want to use this Canon!

But, the Piano Guys’ version of Canon in D caught my attention. See, the beauty of classical music is that it’s so versatile. The Piano Guys kept the same notes of Pachelbel’s all-too-recognizable composition, and they jazzed it up. They made a boring, overused piece of music fun. Even the cello got something out of it! As an off-beat bride, it seems almost backwards to have used a classic piece in my wedding, but I think the fact that the classic had been morphed made it all the more off-beat!

Besides, I love The Piano Guys!

So here are some Pachelbel alternatives for those who still want to keep a hint of that classic feel:

The Slickest Proposal Ever

One of my wedding photographers co-founded this amazing program a few years ago called Kodachrome, a series of dance workshops where people gather to dance, create, inspire, and learn from one another other.
