I went to the Going Pro Dance Convention with Sarah, Jessa, and Renée. Our Lady Raiders coach (or rather, my former coach) is one of the co-founders and executive director of this amazing program. Going Pro Entertainment is a network of pro and semi-pro dancers/cheerleaders past and present. They then provide consultation for those auditioning to be on a pro/semi-pro cheer/dance team.
At the convention, we learned INTENSE choreography from a former Wizard Girls choreographer, a former Miami Dolphins cheerleader, and the founder/director of the Unofficial New York Giants Dancers… and had a really fun Zumba session with a formers Chiefs cheerleader. I’ve said before that I always thought Zumba was a stupid joke… for people who were really too lazy to do proper exercise. Maybe because it came out of the nowhere and became overly popular… I don’t know where I got that idea. But I eat all those words and then some, because the Zumba kicked my butt and I loved it! Plus, Heidi, the instructor gave me and Sarah a free tank top because we volunteered to stand in front haha.
Before lunch, Hillary, the Dolphins cheerleader, gave a really inspiring presentation about auditions. I haven’t really thought about auditioning for a dance team again, but she really got me thinking! All the tips and advice she gave also made me realize why I completely bombed my Wizard Girl auditions.Sidenote: I auditioned for the Wizard Girls in June 2010 and it was an epic fail. I froze up during the freestyle session (which I have always believed to be the reason I didn’t even make the first cut), but that wasn’t the only reason: I wasn’t memorable. Sounds a little depressing, but it’s true. Everything from my make-up to my hair, to the way I presented myself to the judges was why I was cut. I first discovered that during my year as a Lady Raider… and Hillary further enforced it.
Hillary got me pumped though! As did Wanda, the Wizard Girls choreographer. I think with this convention and my experience with the Lady Raiders, I’m better prepared if I ever want to audition for an NBA or NFL (or arena football) dance team again!
